300 TE Suspension Test
Need Help Badly. I need some advice on my rear self leveling system. First of all, I can not locate where I check the fluid level for the system. Is it part of the Power Steering pump?
Secondly, my goal is to raise the body as high as I can and basically leave it there. I need the additional ground clearance as the back of my car hits every time I enter onto my steep inclined driveway. It also hits as I leave the driveway onto the main road. I was wondering. Can I move the adjustment arm on the small valve just ahead of the rear axle and maintain its position such that it would be below the horizontal fooling the system into thinking I have a load in the vehicle? Thanks |

The rear suspension fluid container can be found in the left front of the engine compartment, behind the left front headlight and ahead of the left front shock mount, attached to the inner fender liner.
You can ajust the rear suspension height but it is only for minor adjustments. You may want to try bleeding the system first to see if that cures your level issues. Additionally, there are nitrogen cells at the tops of the rear shocks that go bad. I have not seviced these myself, but you might want to search this site for the repair. It could make a difference. It also may be your rear springs. I believe the procedure is to detach the leveling arm and see where the suspension finds its own height without the assistance of the pump. Rear springs can make a signicant difference in ride height and ride quality. Haasman

BTW, I have replaced three rear springs out of the 14 Mercedes that I have owned. I was always glad I did. It made a big difference.
If that is the problem with your wagon, the rear should come up nicely and unloaded on a flat level surface, the rear should be slightly higher than the front with a full load of fuel. Haasman
