1987 260E Transmission problems

I bought a 260E yesterday and drove it 3 hours home. Drove great. Today, it shifts from 2-3 at high rpm. It won't shift to D. I checked transmission fluid and it was low.

Do these 260E's have a history? The last MB I had was a 240D with a 4-speed manual transmission.

I plan to have the transmission fluid flushed. Anything else I should be looking for?

Congratulations great car! First things first if the transmission fluid is low there must be a leak somewhere. When you are changing the trans filter and gasket check for leaks. Good luck.

I was told by Mercedes that the car starts off in 2nd gear. At 60mph your tach should be about 2800 rpm. I have a 260E and I thought the same thing when I bought it.

Probable causes, kick down solenoid under the gas pedal stuck closed, Bowden cable (pressure control cable) on the throttle linkage stuck, to tight. Valve body problem, Low governor pressure.

Not an easy problem to diagnose, the best way to diagnose is to check governor and working oil pressures. If it’s a stuck valve in the valve body or governor, a flush may free them.
