190D Transmission Slipping
1984 190D 2.2L Automatic Transmission 114,000 miles. The transmission slips when it shifts. If you shift manually it works fine and after the car warms up it will then shift automatically. I searched and read some posts regarding transmissions and some posts talk about vacuum problems and by adjusting the modulator will fix. Could this be a vacuum problem or is the transmission bad and need to be rebuilt? Not sure why it would work fine after the car warms up if it was a vacuum problem.
Thanks in advance for your help, Joe |

Hello Pittsburg.. Good luck in the "Bowl"
First I would try a tranny fluid and filter change. Check threads herein for procedure if you havn't done this before. Pay close attention to the color, odor, and general appearance of the fluid coming out, that will give you an idea of what the tranny condition is. With fresh fluid and filter the cold shifting may improve, it's worth a try. That is not really many miles for a mercedes transmission, you may get lucky. Keep us posted. Al |

I agree with Al,
Try a fluid change first. The vacuum more controls the timing and "smoothness" of the shifts. If it is slipping I would tend to think it is more of an internal problem. Anyone want to back me up on this? By the way, where did you find a 190D with 114k miles??? I'm insanely jealous! Sell it to me and I'll stick a 5-spd in it faster than you can say "clutch pedal"! Good luck! Klaus P.S. I think I have an auto tranny out of a 190d 2.5 that should fit your car. If you get down in the Raleigh, NC area, look me up.

If you want to know whether vacuum could be the problem disconnect the vacuum line at the modulator or where it attches above. The shifts should be very harsh. If one or more gears still slip then you have internal problems.
