Any words of wisdom: Wheel bearing r&r

I plan on replacing the front brakes and also the wheel bearings, due to an increasing rumbling noise. Should I line up a machine shop before hand to press out the races? What else might be difficult? I'm not sure what to expect with the MB (I've replaced bearings on other cars) but I want to minimize the surprises, since its my daily driver. Otherwise I can let a shop do it, but I would rather do it myself.

My experience as been that the outer bearings will slide out once you remove the locking collar. Then, replace the locking collar, but just put it on a thread or two, and pull on the wheel, and the inner bearings and seal should pop out. If that method fails, simply remove the hub and drive out the old inner bearing and race from the outside. I have never had a problem removing bearings from MB cars. I have a 123 car and a 126.

Good luck.

Do a search. There are lots of threads on doing this job. You won't have much trouble changing them, but you will get after reading some discussions here on the best way to get them tightened properly, and what kind of grease to use..

Thanks guys. Sometimes the info from search makes a job seem more complicated and daunting than it really is. Seems simple enough now.

Well mission accomplished. I wish I had known how tough those caliper bolts would be, WOW. I guess they were installed with Loctite and I had to use a bottle jack against a breaker bar to get them loose. Thanks to the person who described how to break those 5 allen bolts loose from the rotor by installing the hub/rotor to the wheel, and using the wheel as a base.

All the old bearings looked pretty good for their age, except one outer race had a tiny little burr in the surface. Hard to believe that can cause all that rumbling, but there it was. Car rides like a limo now!

BTW new parts are Brembo rotors and PBR/Axxis Deluxe pads.
