They may LOOK similar... but they are not. The 420 is a M116 block.. the 560 is a M117. Not interchangeable either.... and would have to be rewired in order to fit.

My recommendation ins find a good 420 engine *IF* your car is in great shape besides the motor. IF not... sell or part out... and buy another 420 or 560. Good luck

Both the 380 and 420 have the same block,..... the M116
The 500 and 560 have the same block... the M117.

Thanks for the info guys. After looking at options I've decided to go with the 300sd. The 420 is just not worth that much to me. The car is in good shape but not pristine. So I'll just put it on hold for now. I might part it out. The interior is in good shape but the car could use paint. I don't think I can justify 4-5 thousand dollars to repair it. So I'll probably be lurking around the diesel forum for a while. If I do decide to part the car I'll post it here first. Thanks for the help.

broken valve

Sorry to hear about your engine loss. I had something like that happen years ago. I was driving a VW Beetle at 1:00 in the morning on a dark, windy highway along the Pacific coast. As I neared the top of a long hill and shifted from 3rd to 4th, the engine gave a loud thumping sound. I immediately turned off the engine and rolled to the side of the road. On trying to resart, I got the same sound so I gave that up.

To make this story short, when I eventually got the car into Eureka, CA to a VW dealer, they took the head off one side of the engine and found a valve head had broken off and was being pounded between the piston and head. The shop replaced the piston and rod and valve and we were good to go. We got off lucky. It was a long, miserable night though.

Is the intake valve stem left in the head or the intake valve guide? My guess is that one of the #4 cylinder valve keepers didn't seat properly upon reinstallation causing the valve to drop into the cylinder. Ouch. Mark

If the keepers let go, the stem would be bent, hanging out of the giude. I believe he said the stem is still in the guide.

Yes, the stem is still in the guide, the head is just sheared off. I haven't even bothered to look any further. Today I picked up the 84 300sd. I had just installed a new set of 16" 8 hole wheels and tires from Tirerack so I'm putting those on the 300, should look pretty nice I think. I had also ordered a new set of Bilstein shocks for the 420. Will these fit on the 300??

Bilstein shows the same part numbers for both cars.
