Sunroof quit

1991 300E sunroof stopped opening midway through cycle. It did close but now won't open. I assume that it needs lubrication. I've seen posts regarding opening with wrench via the trunk. I see a white plastic knob....is that what I turn? Should I do something else besides trying to clean/lubricate the rails. The roof starts to open (just budges) but stops. It also tilts.
