1991 300E sunroof stopped opening midway through cycle. It did close but now won't open. I assume that it needs lubrication. I've seen posts regarding opening with wrench via the trunk. I see a white plastic knob....is that what I turn? Should I do something else besides trying to clean/lubricate the rails. The roof starts to open (just budges) but stops. It also tilts.

I have an 86 190E and the sunroof sometimes sticks in the closed position. I have found that it will eventually open by cycling the open/close switch positions 2 or 3 times. It has always opened after doing this a few times.

Most likely the angles are broken. Common problem

I second Stan's opinion. Same thing happened on my 300E.

thanks for the replies. I removed the sunroof headliner and found that the black bar that moves when the switch to open is activated is not attached at both sides (near rails). Is this a DIY fix or should I pay the big bucks to the expert?

You can repair the sunroof yourself given you have mechanical aptitude and I would suggest access to a manual of some sort. I use alldata.com... it is useful for some things but useless on others. Do you have the Mercedes CD manual for your car? If you want to do it yourself and you do not have a manual, send me an e-mail.

I have a '81 300SD with the sliding, not tilting, sunroof and I have taken it in for repair. I had the motor replaced but the mechanic just quit at that point and now I have a sunroof that doesn't work at all. He told me that I had to remove the back window because something was sticking up in the roof and maybe the tube had to be replaced. Do I really have to take out the back wind to do that. If you have any advice for me, I would really appreciate it. I thought of investing in one of the sunroof CD repair manuals on Ebay but so far, I have not had a lot of success with any of the CDs I have received. Thanks.

I used to own a 1986 560 SEL. The sunroof quit. My very trusted long time MBZ only mechanic said my problem would require the back window to come out. The cable was screwed up in the tube or something to that effect. I said forget it and sold the car (not for that reason) the A-C worked great.
