With all the trouble (and expense) these clutches cause, you wonder why no one has made a hub for a flex fan blade to bolt on to (well, it's definitely going to be noisier, and chopping a finger off if you stick it in the moving blade is just about guaranteed). Maybe liability?

The flex fans are cheaper if you can find an aftermarket one, but for a fan to function and use energy just like you want there is no superior fan than the thermal clutch fan. Your 107 manual is likely close to accurate, as you say. The thermal clutch fans engage only to the degree needed and aren't just lagging fans like the straight viscuous drive, or flexing which is just a function of rpm, not coolant temperature.
