Question Is there supposed to be a safety for this problem?

My 1989 190E 2.6L Gas/Auto MAY OR MAY NOT have a problem.

A brief story:
My wife leaves the car running in a parking lot waiting for a passenger. My 3 year old daughter unbuckles her car seat (which is the mercedes rear seat belt with a booster chair) and makes her way to the shotgun chair. My wife steps out of the car while its running to do something (unknown at this point) and the toddler yanks the car into REVERSE! Luckily, MB has really high gear ratio for reverse and it didnt go very fast, but my wife ran and dove in the car and threw it in park.

Now my Question:
Is there supposed to be a safety for this problem?

Notes: I visited a junkyard 1993 190e 2.6 and i couldnt get the shifter out of park without busting it off (probably.) The car can be taken out of reverse with the key on or off.

What do you think?
