Rear Strut Replacement?
Hello,
I am new to the forum and could not easily find any info on replacing back shocks. My wifes 1989 300 TE has leaking rear struts; in need of replacement. OEM parts are around $500 each (self leveling), can I substitute standard (cheaper $120) struts on this wagon? The bigger question is: should I? Thanks for any advise or opinions. John |

I've done some work on my TE's rear suspension. Search under my name and use keyword "shocks". You should find some information.

Opinion?
I would really appreciate an opinion on if it is advisable to switch from self leveling to a more standard shock. One MB person said it would ruin the ride, and the value of the vehicle...

Problem is, rear springs are designed to match the hydro struts and will not be adequate with normal shocks. In addition, your powersteering pump is combined with the pump for the hydroshocks so you'll have to figure out how to disable a portion of that system or just find a pump from a sedan. Please note that these struts are only replaced when leaking and it is NOT normal to replace both when just one leaks.
