Worse yet: M.B. know, by fact, that the units fail due to their alloy combination of copper and alluminum. And? They still sell the replacements with the same faulty mix. This is one real instance where the company should be held legally responsible for their incompetence and be made to pay for all repairs.
Along these lines, I've often wondered why the EPA allows something like this when they have become SO strict with all their rules and regulations.

Wonder why the service industry is held to such a high standard but the manufacturer is not.

Are you talking about the repair shops and dealer service departments? If so, I'd love to know too!!! I get the crap beat out of me on a regular basis by clients' that think I'm the one who actually designed their car. I try to explain politely that I'm the fireman, not the arsonist!!!

Let me know how it works if you do it!!

I remember in the early 80's that Volvo made a huge deal that their famous 240 line (244/245) had a certified average life expectancy of 18.6 years!!!

Mercedes did a similar study and found out the the W123 class had a life cycle of about 17.5 years and the W126 16.9 years.

Of course, these were just average numbers from a general study. But it is easy to see several old W123/126s and Volvos 240s still driving around, many in good shape. In fact, I do believe that if the study were executed again, it would find that actually the life cycle of those cars is even longer.

The average life cycle refers to a car which runs continuosly just with proper regular maintenance and without major repairs or problems.

So, what about the life cycle of a W210/220???

I agree with previous posters, it should be at the most 7 to 8 years, then be prepared to fork $$$$ for major repairs.

why don't you buy the service cds, new all copper evap and do it yourself?
you will be more carefull and not tear up stuff because it is yours, you will have satisfaction...

it is not hard greasy work just tedious. just take your time; label, bag, take photos as you dissasemble. a good long weekend should do it. hell i live 4 hours from you in greenville, if you want to hire me i would do it for half...or possibly buy your car as is.

as for toyota, have you priced toyota parts? alot more expensive than mb parts.
