Exhaust Heat Shields
Part of the heat shield around my C280 exhaust system rusted off. The mechanic removed the rest of the heat shield, stating this was the proper repair. He did not recommend replacing the exhaust system because it is in good condition. Does removing the heat shield on the exhaust system damage the car in the long run? Will the exhaust system omit excessive heat now? What do you all think about this repair? Do you recommend replacing the exhaust system?
Thanks for your help.

If he said the exhaust is in good condition I'd take his word for it. Most people would try to sell you a new one

Ditto. Not only that, but the heat shields really only help when the car is hot and you drive or park in places that have tall grass (as an example) or alot of dry leaves maybe. The heat shields are supposed to keep the grass and crap underneath the car from catching fire. (OK, so I read that in a Ford service manual. Take it or leave it.)
If you ride in your car barefoot alot you may notice the floor becoming warmer than before, but otherwise in regular city/highway use the heat shields are pretty well worthless. All in all it's actually better for your car to be able to be rid of exhaust heat easier anyway. |
