MB tech method alarm repair?
I took my 2002 C240 to the dealer today to have my alarm looked at. When I use the SmartKey to lock the car or sometimes open the car the alarm will sound. The problem is random and intermittent.
I though the dealer would connect a computer to the car and check that all the components were talking to one another properly. The dealer said NO, that they have to duplicate the problem by using the key, and they didn't connect any computer to the car. Does that seem like the proper way to fix the car? Could it be the SmartKey is the problem? if seems only one of my two keys cause the alarm to sound. can keys be scanned or checked for compatability to the in car components? |

The reason/reasons that the alarm was sounding is stored in the computer (forget which one), they can use SDS to access the proper computer and it will give the reason for the last several alarms.

just tell them to scan it and give you a printout, did they charge you for what they have done (or not done) so far?

I don't know yet about the charges.
Droped car off at 7:30 a.m. get a Jetta rental car (9k miles) that has a loud droning noise that gave me a headache - 35 dollars a day, but I don't mind. Call dealer at 2:15 p.m. for an update Dealer returns call at 4:00 p.m.and tells me car never hooked up to computer, and they couldn't duplicate alarm. I had written a note about the tele-aid contacting me everytime the alarm goes off and the randomness of the problem. Thought I was covering all my basis to help the tech as much as possible. car is out of warranty approx three months, very few miles on car, and maintain it like an exotic. This months Startech magazine had an article about the MB diagnostic computers, will re-read it this morning for fun. Thanks for the GREAT info. |

They connected the car to the diagnostic computer today, they hadn't looked at the car yet when I was told yesterday that they couldn't find the fault!!
The SDS showed an alarm module problem and it's replacement would be $450. I'll get the details when I pick up the car. When I get the paperwork back I'll post the symptoms again and the repaired part. I asked for the old part back. Also, when I went to the dealer today my salesman told me my loaner car should be free so I was credited that amount. If I was paying for a loaner car and the dealer was sitting on the car for two days before looking at it, that would have upset me. |

Even the people at the Teleaid center can tell you why the alarm went off.

Gilly - Now you tell me!
just kidding they replaced part# A 171 820 25 26 listed as a Control Unit. I have no idea where the item is positioned in the car, I am going to try to find out. I am very glad to get the car back. Hopefully no more electrical gremlins. Scott Baltimore |
