M104 Intermittent Cruise Control.

I've been searching the forum and found lots of excellent information on the subject, but still not 'there' to solve the problem.

Car in question is European E320 Wagon 1995.

The hesitation problem i've been having around 2000rpm range improved a lot after changing the plug boots from the three coils. Engine feels much more responsive now, but I still get occational mis-fires on idle. In fact, I'm not really sure if this is still a problem, as I have no other cars to compare with.

However, the CC is still acting up consistently above 80km/h - it keeps the set speed, but the accelerator is on-off-on---off-ooooooon-off-onoffoonoff. Rather uncomfortable. I've replaced the stop lamp switch after pulling codes 5 and 11 from the CC module (pin 14). Cleared the memory, but code 11 keeps coming back. (Code 5 is gone)
Code 11 meaning "Fuel safety shut-off to LH-SFI module", I don't really know what to test or look for. (Car has no LH-SFI, but HFM) To me, it suggests that the CC module sends a 'go-into-"limp-home"-signal' to the ECU now and then, but that leave me clueless.

Anyone?

More specific....

My Cruise Control is still acting up consistently above 80km/h - it keeps the set speed, but the accelerator is on-off-on---off-ooooooon-off-onoffoonoff. Rather uncomfortable. It works 100% below 80km/h, and I would think that that rules out any problems with hall-effect sensor signal.

I've replaced the stop lamp switch after pulling codes 5 and 11 from the CC module (pin 14). Cleared the memory, but code 11 keeps coming back. (Code 5 is gone)

With Code 11 - "Fuel safety shut-off to LH-SFI module", I don't really know what to test or look for. (Car has no LH-SFI, but HFM) To me, it suggests that the CC module sends a 'go-into-"limp-home"-signal' to the ECU now and then, but that leave me clueless.

Any input is appreciated.

-Lars.

Code 11 can be throttle cable does not have any slack or sticking.
CC cut-out at higher speeds/rpms can be caused by unequal tire size/air pressure...

Cheers, Arthur.

I'll check the throttle cable according to spec as described in WIS.

Same tires/rims on all four. Pressure checked and adjusted regularly, so I would rule that out..

WIS is also pointing out speedo wire as a possible cause, if it has been twisted or damaged. But I would have thought that the CC problem would have been consistent in all speed ranges? Any experience on this?

Humble regards,
Lars.

Did some work on it last night....

Cleaned up thoroughly, re-regreased the components of the linkage, checked throttle cable play, did the measurements and adjusted everything according to article in WIS. --> CC still jerky. Cleared code 11 from CC/IC, and will see if it's reappearing..

Tires are evenly worn (fairly new ones 225/45/17), and tire pressure is OK.

However, the speedometer needle is shaking now and then. I had ruled that source out, as the CC is working consistently well in speed range 40-80km/h, and is consistently jerking above 80km/h, regardless of speedo shake or not.

Any more hints?

LarsL, how many miles are on your 1995 E320? You mention that you replaced the plug boots. What's the condition of the other ignition wires and spark plugs? When was the fuel filter and oxygen sensor replaced last? We need more information to diagnose your problem.

Ferdman,

Car has 214.000 KM on it.

The hesitation problems were gone after replacing the coil boots.
After lifting off the air intake hose to the inlet manifoil to gain access to the throttle linkage, I noticed the clamp securing the hose was not seated properly, not entirely tightened and not covering the rubber sleeve 100%. Fixed that, I my impression was the engine had improved even more.

Now I would like to have my Cruise Control 100% operational.

I'm opening a new thread on this as the subject on this thread is misleading.

Thanks and Regards,
Lars.
