What The?

I Have Never Seen Instrumentation Like This, Look At The Rpm Counter It Is Where The Gas Gauge Should Be, And What Is The Electronic Stuff Where The Conventional Tach Should Be. Looks Nice On What Models Was This Offered, Was It An Extra?

Thumbs up

It's not just a speedo.... the tach is on the LEFT where the fuel gauge is normally and there is some sort of Digital read out where the tach/clock is typically.

As Johnhef said it's a factory installed trip/fuel mileage computer. The tachometer had to be moved to the left side of the cluster to accommodate the the computer. I saw one on a friend's car once but never saw it in operation. Mark

It's more than just the cluster. Did you go to the auction link? It's probably another harness, PCM, etc.

Extra wiring harness

I'm sure that would involve an extra wiring harness to connect that gauge to all of the appropriate sites. These things are so common now in most cars.

I guess it was more of a novelty back then. I would guess the early ones were a combination of mechanical and electronic components?

The orange triangle with the "!" is the ASR light, which as I understand, comes on when the ASR is engaged. If it's lit all the time, then I think something is wrong. I looked at and test drove one of these with the "!" little orange light on, and it wouldn't go off, so I passed on the car. This is not supposed to be the best opion to look for in these cars.

I'm not certain, but these early "trip computers" were, I think NOT offered as options in US spec. cars. I have never seen one. There was a small refrigerator offered as an option, but I have never heard of one in the US models. You could get the electric rear window roller blinds and orthopedic seats (Heavy dutyframes) likethe Alcantara or velour seats, however, few US buyers did.

The trip computer is not compatible with US cars. Reason being the computer does all the counting in metric, while the US speedometer is in MPH. The trip computer calculates distance and fuel consumption. Besides the cluster, the central wood console piece has a touchpad sized control piece where you set the distance and calculation. All wording on the cluster was only available in German. None were available in English. They were sometimes ordered as an option in the Scandinavian countries and usually cars with an onboard computer were Scandinavian spec.

To do a proper conversion, you'd need the following:
1) cluster with correct gauges
2) proper wiring harness
3) onboard computer module
4) wood console piece with proper cutout
5) control unit thats found in the cutout on the wood piece.

From what I've seen, around 5% of Euro spec cars have this option. Its one of the more rare options found on W126's.

Other rare options are the 4-place seating, electric rear sunshade and webasto heater.

126 Euro Cluster

I happen to own a very rare euro 420SE with the left side half moon tach and trip computer as well as a sport shift transmission with E=economy and S=sport setting; both rare options even in europe; reputedly for AMG cars but I can't confirm. Trip computer is connected with a special wiring harness to shift console where the buttons are to enter requests for trip distance; gas mileage; km/h computations etc.

The E/S switch were on nearly all 2nd gen Euro cars. Its not an AMG item, nor did AMG have any part with it. The trip computer is infact a rare option as mentioned above.
