1999 E320 shift problem

I have a 99 E320. The problem I am having is it won't let me manually shift to the lower gears. The shift lever will not slide over to allow me to shift down. The trans. works fine in Drive, shifting through all the gears. HELP!

That still has the older style shifter, so parts are available for it. The linkage on the 722.6 just goes into P-R-N-D, the shifts down lower than drive are just electrical signals to the trans. So possibly/probably it's something inside the shifter itself, ie broken/out of adjustment/fell off. Weird situation though. If you are just barely tugging on the shifter, it may be a range recognition switch. If you've pulled pretty hard, the range switch is kinda fragile and probably would have broken, so in that case something more substantial has happened.
