Trans. help
hello members,
I am looking for ideas relating to the tranny on my 300e 1987. doesn't upshift 3-4. I have read a couple of threads and have puzzled ideas. What would be the best and least expensive way to go. Rebuild or replacement from another 300e. Thanks Dance87300e |

Least expensive would probably be a used one from another car, if that's all you're worried about is cost...........

300e tranny
Thanks Gilly for the response. I want all info. that I can get. I have searched some threads and have found a tranny for 1300. Could there be a smaller problem with this thing. Or is it shot. Can there be a simple repair or something more in depth.
thanks again. sorry for the lateness of my reply. U know work and things sometimes get in the way. |

Have you serviced the unit recently? If not, might be a good idea to start there... check vac lines, modulator, valve body for crap when the pan comes off, etc.
What's the mileage on this 722?

I'd suspect a problem with the command valve (3-4 upshift) in the valve body. I agree you should check basic maintenance stuff too. If it's in the clutch in the transmission, then worry about a rebuild or replacement.

Thanks Hit Man
I have 175,000 miles on the car. The service thing? Would a repair guy know what to look for? Thanks |

Tranny help
Thanks again Gilly
Are the service questions diffcult for a DIY'er to do? How much knowledge would one have to have in order to see and understand what the trouble might be? Thanks |

Hard thing for me to quantify "how much". It's your car, if you feel like taking a hack at it, why not? If you feel intimidated, take that in to account. The worst thing I can see happening is you can't get it back together and at least being able to drive it to a shop, in which case you are out the cost of a tow. It's kind of a messy thing to work on, especially when the trans is in the car, with the pan off they just drip "forever" from the guts of the tranny. What I mentioned was the command valve, this is in the valve body, which is easy to unbolt once the pan is off, so you aren't underneath getting dripped on, but the tranny will still be dripping on whatever is underneath it! The valve body is a pretty complex piece of construction, with a dozen or two of tiny little ball bearings that can fall out, so you need to keep everything pretty contained and not lose or misinstall ANY of them. There are charts that show where they all go, and I can probably direct you to the command valve that needs to be checked (to see if it's seized). and remember it could be the clutch in the tranny too, so all this work may be for nothing. THERE! Feel up to it?
