Mirror exploded on the freeway, need to install new one...
As I saw the 10" or so long metal rod come flying over the center divider of the 880 Freeway here in the Bay Area, I thought "Oh jeez, I gotta try to avoid that." I thought I did until I heard the huge noise and then realized that my passenger side mirror looked like it was shot. My wife actually thought we had been shot - we were just passing the Oakland Coliseum...Anyway, the outside cover is gone, there is a huge hole through the internal back and some of the little metal ball sockets are broken. But it is still completely attached to the doorframe although the rubber boot is very scraped. An inch away and it would have hit the pillar or even come through the window or hit the hood. Scary.
Anyway, I need a new one. I figure I will find something on ebay, hopefully in Arctic White. The question is - I have a 92 400E, the mirror is electric. Is there one cord/plug total that goes through the winodw or more? So far I only see one. Is installation easy or very difficult? My other thought it to try and get a driver side from the UK with electric, but that might be tough., It would be nice to have two mirrors that are both the same size, the current situation is about the only aesthetic criticism I have about the car. Thanks, Jim |

they are shaped differently for a reason. to better see depending on which situation you are facing. on the right it is a convex mirror and the more square shape maximizes its usfulness.
if it were me i would stick with the factory setup. i admit it looks odd to be different shapes but there is good reasoning behind it. good luck with the repair. tom w

Good to hear only the mirror was damaged, you are very fortunate. I was driving an Oldsmobile on I-95 through Philadelphia during morning rush hour when I was passed by a cowboy truck driver with a semi flatbed. He was doing about 80 mph and when he passed me on the right and when he cut in front of me he veered onto the left shoulder and kicked up a piece of angle iron about a foot long. My Olds had chrome bumper and the object hit the front bumper right in front of me. It hit so hard it put a hole in the bumper and deflected over the car. If the object was a foot higher in the air it would have gone right at me. This event really shook me up and reminded me to keep a good distance away from large trucks regardless of the traffic situation.
