124 Windshield Replacement Warning!
Or any other Benz with a single windshield wiper.
The warning is: REMOVE THE WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY BEFORE HAVING THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED! I replaced the windshield in my 300E a few years ago by someone who SAID that they had done them before and knew what they were doing. I DO believe that he had done them before, but I DON'T believe that he knew what he was doing. He ended up gluing the windshield to the wiper assembly and I ended up breaking the windshield severely in order to remove the wiper assembly. I have replaced the 300E now and I am getting it up in shape to either sell or keep as a back up car. I had to destroy the bottom of the windshield to get out the box for greasing. It will only run for a short while before jamming up, so it is not usable on a rainy day as it was.. Now I will have to save some money for a windshield for a car that I no longer drive. I don't want to put the wiper back on until the windshield is in place. Take this warning seriously. If you let someone glue in a windshield without removing the motor assembly, you will most likely waste the windshield if you ever have to remove the WW assembly. I have heard a glass man say that he uses a thin sheet of stiff plastic between the WW assy and the new windshield to keep this from happening. After what I have gone through, I would not want to take that chance. Good luck, PS, I no longer have an MB on the road, so I guess my posting here will decrease even more. I have enjoyed everyones company over the last five and a half years. Keep in touch. LB. |

Yes, step 3 in the Mercedes service procedure for windshield replacement (67-100) states:
"3. Remove wiper system (group 82)" I think most dealers farm out windshield replacements, so ask them who to use.

Larry,
What did you replace the 300E with? I hope you don't sell it. It is a perfectly running car, that is paid for. If you try and sell it, you'll get nothing for it.

Larry -
So sorry to see you leave the fold. Please do let us know with what you replaced the 124. I'm especially curious because after six straight Daimler automobiles I don't see any more in my future. I don't have the time or energy for the gremlins inherent in a 15 year old daily driver, the current products don't strike me as worth the money, and I won't do business with Ewing ********. So likely my next car is not an MB, curious what you chose in that situation? - JimY |

Well it has taken me awhile to prepare for this post because my flame suit takes a long time to get on and get the oxygen all hooked up.
The only other cars, besides MB's,that I have driven over the years that I have gotten high mileage out of have been Fords. I put a zillion miles on a few '66 Mustangs and had an '85 Mustang GT that I really enjoyed driving. I have admired the newest Mustang since it came out and when they put out 0% interest for 6 years I pulled the trigger. I bought a new '06, 300HP V8 GT with a manual transmission. In spite of the solid rear axle, I really enjoy driving it. It's quick and solid and suits my current needs quite well. Like Jim Yuhn, the constant repair of the auxilliary equipment on my 124 just got to be overwhelming. The drivetrain and suspension have proven to be near bullet proof, but I have replaced so much stuff on the car from a/c parts, to belt tensioners to you name it, I'm just done. Currently I'm working 60 or so hours a week and just dont have the time any more to keep up with it. Okay, so I will get the oxygen mask on and then hit the submit key. |

Larry,
A cautionary note for you regarding your new Mustang. It has many "automatic" functions. You might want to read the owners manual. Be careful with all those unknown buttons and levers on your new Mustang. We wouldn't want you to unknowingly activate the seat eject. Bob PS Thanks for all your help... ![]() |

Hey Larry!
I was wondering where you have been. Often I see a post, and wonder why you haven't thrown your two cents in. Now, I know. My gasket is still good, but I will certainly remember to be sure and remove the assembly first. 60 hours is a bunch....hopefully it pays the bills though, and it won't go on forever. btw...just cuz you've given up MB's (for now) doesn't mean you can't pull up a chair and let yourself be seen ![]() Take care, -Larry

If you enjoy the car thats the only thing that really matters since your the one paying all the bills. I hope you enjoy the Mustang. They have always been a great car for the money and the new one is really nice. Don't throw the towel in for the MB model line. There are lots of other cars out there other than 124's. My take on 124's is they are more trouble than they are worth. You have the same expense and hassle of dealing with their issues as you would in an S class or an SL and your still driving an E class. A word of advice perhaps. Let the new owner deal with any other problems you run into. Most buyers of older MB's are not on the same level as people on this list. Most buyers will be happy with a car that starts and drives well with a reasonable cosmetic appearance. It would be a shame for you to sink a ton of money into a car only to sell it to some undeserving person who is not smart enough to appreciate the deal they got. |

I'm not a big fan of Ford cars, but...
Larry:
Keep that flame suit on. It'll come in handy for when your hair catches fire from driving that new Mustang!!! You may want to turn the oxygen off before driving, though. One of a very short list of cars that I think is well worth the money!!! That is one sweet ride and I know you'll make it last damn near forever. Please keep the 300E running. Otherwise, you might eventually get tired of posting on this board, and that would be a shame and a loss for everyone trying to get useful information off of this site! Brian

Well, that probably wouldn't have been in my first three guesses. But it makes perfect sense when you think about it. There's nuthin' wrong with a stang. I've not driven the current model, but recall the buff books raving about how Ford got it so right in so many ways. Wish they could pull off that kind of magic in some other market segments; they are in a world of hurt these days.

They really don't want to work on them!! I have 17, 14 and 7 year old models -- and they have been pretty good to me. Of course, I do most of my own work if possible, but have had no major problems, such as A/C or other big ones. BC in Dallas

Its a sad day for this forum to see Larry B leaving. I only hope that you'll still be available to offer advice via PM one in awhile.
Thank you for all your informative posts. Good luck Larry - I think you'll miss the driving 124 after a while - hopefully you'll be back ![]()

I'm sure that I won't be leaving forever. At least I hope not. That would mean that I have gotten cancer or been run over by an S Class doing 100MPH or something.
I will check in from time to time and say hello. |

Larry,
Being located "downunder", I am a long way from the majority of members on this forum. I also don't get to spend as much time logged-in here as I would like. Nonetheless, I still consider this forum to be the best for technical talk about our cars and that is due to knowledgeable and helpful members such as you. I have been made to feel welcome here and on numerous occasions you have assisted me with your replies. I have also enjoyed reading many of your numerous posts where you have assisted others. I too hope that you keep at least one MB and remain somewhat active on this forum. Mind you, if you do come to sell your 300E, I just wish there was some easy and inexpensive way to get it all the way down here. Many here would love to get their hands on it as we were never so fortunate to get a W124 with a manual tranny behind a six-cylinder. Good luck, enjoy your new car and thanks again for your help over the past few years. Greg
