124 Windshield Replacement Warning!
Or any other Benz with a single windshield wiper.
The warning is: REMOVE THE WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY BEFORE HAVING THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED! I replaced the windshield in my 300E a few years ago by someone who SAID that they had done them before and knew what they were doing. I DO believe that he had done them before, but I DON'T believe that he knew what he was doing. He ended up gluing the windshield to the wiper assembly and I ended up breaking the windshield severely in order to remove the wiper assembly. I have replaced the 300E now and I am getting it up in shape to either sell or keep as a back up car. I had to destroy the bottom of the windshield to get out the box for greasing. It will only run for a short while before jamming up, so it is not usable on a rainy day as it was.. Now I will have to save some money for a windshield for a car that I no longer drive. I don't want to put the wiper back on until the windshield is in place. Take this warning seriously. If you let someone glue in a windshield without removing the motor assembly, you will most likely waste the windshield if you ever have to remove the WW assembly. I have heard a glass man say that he uses a thin sheet of stiff plastic between the WW assy and the new windshield to keep this from happening. After what I have gone through, I would not want to take that chance. Good luck, PS, I no longer have an MB on the road, so I guess my posting here will decrease even more. I have enjoyed everyones company over the last five and a half years. Keep in touch. LB. |

Yes, step 3 in the Mercedes service procedure for windshield replacement (67-100) states:
"3. Remove wiper system (group 82)" I think most dealers farm out windshield replacements, so ask them who to use.

Larry,
What did you replace the 300E with? I hope you don't sell it. It is a perfectly running car, that is paid for. If you try and sell it, you'll get nothing for it.

Larry -
So sorry to see you leave the fold. Please do let us know with what you replaced the 124. I'm especially curious because after six straight Daimler automobiles I don't see any more in my future. I don't have the time or energy for the gremlins inherent in a 15 year old daily driver, the current products don't strike me as worth the money, and I won't do business with Ewing ********. So likely my next car is not an MB, curious what you chose in that situation? - JimY |

Well it has taken me awhile to prepare for this post because my flame suit takes a long time to get on and get the oxygen all hooked up.
The only other cars, besides MB's,that I have driven over the years that I have gotten high mileage out of have been Fords. I put a zillion miles on a few '66 Mustangs and had an '85 Mustang GT that I really enjoyed driving. I have admired the newest Mustang since it came out and when they put out 0% interest for 6 years I pulled the trigger. I bought a new '06, 300HP V8 GT with a manual transmission. In spite of the solid rear axle, I really enjoy driving it. It's quick and solid and suits my current needs quite well. Like Jim Yuhn, the constant repair of the auxilliary equipment on my 124 just got to be overwhelming. The drivetrain and suspension have proven to be near bullet proof, but I have replaced so much stuff on the car from a/c parts, to belt tensioners to you name it, I'm just done. Currently I'm working 60 or so hours a week and just dont have the time any more to keep up with it. Okay, so I will get the oxygen mask on and then hit the submit key. |

Larry,
A cautionary note for you regarding your new Mustang. It has many "automatic" functions. You might want to read the owners manual. Be careful with all those unknown buttons and levers on your new Mustang. We wouldn't want you to unknowingly activate the seat eject. Bob PS Thanks for all your help... ![]() |

If you enjoy the car thats the only thing that really matters since your the one paying all the bills. I hope you enjoy the Mustang. They have always been a great car for the money and the new one is really nice. Don't throw the towel in for the MB model line. There are lots of other cars out there other than 124's. My take on 124's is they are more trouble than they are worth. You have the same expense and hassle of dealing with their issues as you would in an S class or an SL and your still driving an E class. A word of advice perhaps. Let the new owner deal with any other problems you run into. Most buyers of older MB's are not on the same level as people on this list. Most buyers will be happy with a car that starts and drives well with a reasonable cosmetic appearance. It would be a shame for you to sink a ton of money into a car only to sell it to some undeserving person who is not smart enough to appreciate the deal they got. |

Now, I just want something that just runs. I don't care if it's boring and can't go flat out on the Autobahn. Just needs to start every day and not have a new problem every other month... ...Kias are starting to look good right now. Hyundai appears to be the luxury option for me these days! ![]()
