Testing a fan clutch and replacement
How do you test the fan clutch on an S500. It seems to turn very freely and when the engine is cool I would swear it's going slow enough I could stop it, although I haven't tried it. Also I looked at the new parts on line and I can't see how the clutch is attached to the water pump. Doesn't seem to have the 4 holes through it to bolt up. I'm running temps in the low 80s on the road, over 100 in traffic. Thanks

The fan should spin freely when its cold... you could grab it with your hands (wrapped in a towel) when idling. When ithe motor is hot the clutch will be working and the fan will spin in relation to the motor speed. You don't want to grab it then.
What kind of motor is in there? ...meaning which V8 designation? For sure there is a diagram for you somewhere on the web, or here. I have an early 90's S-class shop printed shop manual...but that won't help you. ![]() |

Viscous coupling
This should give you an idea how the fan clutch operates and how to assess whether it is working normally;http://mb.braingears.com/124_DISC1/Program/Engine/602_603/20-310.pdf
