Okay, on a DIY tear. I want to get the 560SL ready to sell. I'm not really a DIYer and can't afford to maintain this thing. 150k miles...

The a/c seal gasket went (per an a/c guy that checked it). Can it be replaced/accessed from the top? does not look like it.

When replacing the seal do you need to replace the drier? Should I even try this myself? I managed the wiring harness and ETA on my '94 E420, but maybe I should just quit while I'm ahead (and pay the $$).

Are you takling about the compressor front seal?? if so that requires several "special" tools..one to remove & 2 others to install the seal & the seal ring surface.

Yes, the compressor main seal. Are these parts an A/C specialist would have (usually) or only a Mercedes Dealer or specialist would have?

The compressor is Denso...so only a/c service techs with Denso tools would be able to do that....I would suggest a complete reman unit

Oh, and I think it is actually the O-ring that's bad. They have several, right? He just said he could hear leaking at the 'top' of the compressor when they put pressure into the system.

Still suggest a rebuilt...If I go that way, is it then a DIY project? I've not done A/C work before (unless you count installing a new heater core in a 280SEL 4.5 , 15 years ago...ugh....)

jeez...if its just a o-ring.... go to the dealer and get the right ones...

you will still have to have someone vacuum the system.... i would put in a 30 dollar drier, too..

if you did a heater core in a w108 or is it w109... then you can certainly do this.

drier 30 bucks..

Thanks. Do you know if the Service CD would have diagrams/instructions for replacing the o-rings. I'm a newbie and would need a manual/guide of some sort. I've spent the last 30-45 minutes searching the posts here and can't get a clear read of what the best route is - other than to buy the CD and all manuals...

I just did some more searching on 107 service manuals on the mercedes website. I found the regular $20 CD's. I also found a CD (or set of...) for $150 on the MB Canada site (I'm in the US).

Anyone know about that?

I just picked-up some original service manuals that just happened to be for sale here in Austin. I got the 107 chassis and body (1 and 2 ) as well as the cliamte control/ heating/ac manual.

Also picked-up some 124 manuals and others. May see the non-107 and 124 manuals for sale at a website near you soon!

i don't think you need the manual... i think you need the correct o-rings...

every place where a hose goes into a fitting there is usually an 0-ring.... there is also some blue goo.... like a heavy oil that you can rub the o-rings in to guarantee a good seal...

for the life of me i can't think of the goo.... it comes in about a 2 oz bottle and costs about 8 bucks... some swear by it..others say it's not necessary..

I used the stuff when i did my a/c this summer..
