rough Idling 560SEL - fuel injectors?

My mechanic tells me that my fuel distributor checks ok, but that one of my injectors has an improper spray pattern. He suggested that In use a few tanks full of good fuel with Techron additive to clean it out. I've done that and the idle is still rough, sometimes barely noticeable, sometimes not.

Should I just order a full set of injectors and seals and install them myself? How much of a job is this? The injectors are on top of the heads and should be easily accessible - just unscrew the old and screw in the new. Am I oversimplifying? Is this a DIY job, or should I leave this to the professionals?

My mechanic tells me that no harm is being done and that the 126 is notorious for idling issues, by the quivering idle distracts me. If I can save the $90/hr. I'd like to!

Euromeister sells injectors for $35. each. Anybody know someplace even cheaper?

If you have over 100K on the car I would replace them. You'll need the injector/cup/seal/oring as well as the air distribution lines.

35 an injector is a VERY Good price. They list for 69 a piece now (recent price hike).

The job is fairly straight forward. I would pressure wash the top of the engine before had as well as blow any debris off w/ a good compressor.

Also, hit the 5mm hex bolts that hold the injector clamps down w/ a good penetrating oil the day before..it will help keep the going Smooth!

Did your mechanic check the on/off ratio?.

And how does he know that the spray pattern is bad unless he pulled the injectors out and tested them? I have tested several sets of 100K+ injectors that sprayed perfectly. Spray some carb cleaner around the injectors and see if the idle smoothes out a bit. Sometimes the seals leak but the injectors are fine, or at least good enough.

And are you sure that you don't have cracks in the rubber connectors for the vacuum lines?

If you pull the injectors, a set of hex drivers with 6" bits will help a lot. KD makes a decent set.

Not such a big fan of the carb clean method, one it's tough on what seals are there, two, have it flame up on you once and it won't seem like such a good method;-)

I like to use a propane feed around the injectors to check for leaks.

MB rates their injectors @ 100K before they start to fall off (pop @ the wrong pressure etc..).

the Long hex sockets do help out Quite a bit..Snapon makes some nice ones as well.

And another thing....rough idling on older 560SEL's can be caused by vacumn line leaks.
