Keyless Lock/Unlock Install & Multi-switch
I purchased a keyless lock/unlock for my W124 1992 400E. Looks as thought installation is pretty straight forward with the exception of wiring to the steering wheel mounted multi-switch. Not that the wiring itself is complex, but getting to the multi-switch looks like a substantial project in itself (steering wheel & under dash panel removals...yikes!). Didn't find much on this in searches for "keyless alarm" or "multiswitch", so my questions are as follows:
1. Can this switch be accessed in any other way (to tap into the circuit without all steps leading to the assumed need for complete removal)? I think no. 2. Related to the multiswitch: Does this switch carry the full electrical load for the signal lamps, or does it have microswitches to relays that actually power the signal lamps. If relays, where are the relays located (and could I tap in the system at a more convenient location)? 3. Any other options known out there? I'm thinking a "chirp", in lieu of blinking signals that tapping into the multiswitch provides. I would very much appreciate your inputs......Scott |

No switch removal
Not sure of the answer to the question about the relays. I installed (with a tech helping out) a similar system in the wife's 400. I pulled the kick panel under the dash, and opened the wire loom coming out of the ignition switch and the multi switch. It is tight in there, but I made my splices there. No removal of any components.
You can find those wires also coming out in a loom. It means a bit of time under the dash sleuthing wires. No steering wheel removal either. All parallel splices. Helps to have the MB color codes. ![]() This was a while back, and since then, having had to disconnect the battery at some point, I lost some of the function. To regain it I have to go back under there and reset the brains, which I have been lazy about. The lock and remote start work, just the signal light function and horn chirp are out. All told it was worth it, the wife likes it. Good luck.

Many thanks Peter - I do have wire colors (at the multi switch) provided with the installation instructions, and with your description, and working under the assumption that they are the same color at this location, I should be able to track them down - Just what I wanted to hear!
PS.. since we have the same vehicle, did the "convenience control" (?exact name?) take car of arming and disarming the factory alarm for you (from a single connection to the vacuum pump), or did you need to add additional connections to the alarm control unit (under front passenger upper floor)? I believe that the single connection to the vacuum pump should do it, but because of your experience, I'd like to confirm. Thanks Again...Scott |

My system does arm and disarm the factory alarm. I remember putting a couple relays (5-pin) spliced into the right side door wires that lock/unlock arm/disarm.
And that's about all I recall. I'll see if I can dig up the wiring diagram. Or take a look at the wiring when the rain stops.

Call this guy.
Jim LaPlant (atlanta).404-277-9383. He can answer all your questions, wires, location, color. You can wire this whole system from under the rear seat and tap into the lighting harness on the left side wiring loom under the rear seat. You will need a relay pack and two relays. Jim can be more specific as he does this stuff every day. Tell Jim John sent you. |
