Transmission rough when put into drive from reverse

Hi,
I have a 1991 190E 2.3. The car runs great and the tranny shifts perfectly (crisp and no slips). I changed the tranny oil and filter recently and it now has a rough engagement when shifting from reverse to drive. It shifts into reverse and drive with no problems. It only does it when I shift into reverse, back up (i.e. from a parking spot) and then shift into drive to go forward. It will slam into first when I step on the accelerator. It works perfectly otherwise....any ideas?
Thanks

So, it doesn't go into gear until you give it gas? Please clarify. Shift linkage?

Check vacuum hose

The vacuum diaphragm on the drivers side front is used to control the hardness of shifts. If the hose is off, or there is otherwise a vacuum leak, you can get "slamming".

Double check the fluid level, while it's hot and on level ground. Too high or low fluid level will cause a delay in shift engagement.. If the level is too high, the air from the frothing, or too low, the sucking of air for a bit causing a delay in engagement.
