1986 420SEL steering box noise

About three months ago I noted a knocking sound coming from the front suspension area, toward the left side. Lower ball joints are ok, replaced upper control arms, tie rod ends, brake control rod bushings, shocks, steering shock. Still the noise. It makes the front end feel sort of loose, and is especially noticeable driving slow over bumps. Tonight I tracked the noise down to the steering box. When my daughter ran the steering wheel side to side rapidly, short throw, while the car was jacked up with me underneath it, I can go right to the noise, and it's the box. I notice an adjuster bolt on top of it, right where I can't get a wrench conveniently, for adjustment. Would adjusting it take that condition out of it, or should I get another steering box? Has anyone had this problem?

Advice, please?

Dave
