Anybody had to replace the timing chain on a 202?
I am not having a problem, but I drive a lot and will be at 200k within 2 years. Is this something I need to plan for on an m111?
I've never heard of anyone doing it, but I know that on some of the other motors, this kind of mileage might prompt one to do it. Oil changes done every 5k since 60k, has 140k now. I'm a pretty hard driver though. You do have to wind these M111s sometimes

As far as I can tell, timing chains on inline 4 and inline 6 engines are virtually never changed as the chains are so short.
M103 and M104 inline 6 engines also use a ratcheting type chain tensioner so that the tensioner doesn't lose tension when the engine is off because it doesn't rely on oil pressure. I'd guess that your M111 uses the same type of tensioner.

I've been keeping a close "ear" on my timing chain, and soon I'll measure it for stretch. The local dealer FREAKS if you exceed 160K-kms (100K-mi) and tells you that you are about to completely destroy your engine.
My indie starts getting serious about checking them at 200K-kms and above and usually replaces them at 250K (~150K-miles) or so "just to be safe." The M111 uses a double roller chain and has a nice short path, so they do last a looong time. Give them a nice bath of Mobil 1 changed with reasonable frequency, and the timing chain should last. M103's also have a nice short path, but they do have a single row chain and should be changed with greater frequency. My mechanic advises that the M103 chains get done at about 180-200K-kms.

I did a search of "timing chain" over at club 202 and the results were good if not very informative.
There is good stuff there if you SEARCH, but I agree that this site is extraordinary. |

Thanks Ethan, I did find a few posts, but as you said, nothing ultra-deep
I am at 141k now. I thought I didn't have to worry about it until at least 200k. John, now I'm thinking that I better at least have it checked for stretch when I do my next service. I'm due for plugs at 160k, and that will be 40k on my current trans fluid, so I'll just make the most of my shop visit I guess.
