need dolly to tow a 260e/300e benz?

car stat: 1987 260E
I am just curious, do you really need a dolly attached to the rear wheel to tow a W124 (260E/300E) series benz? I need a tow and the company I called mentioned that they need to put a dolly onto the rear wheels because its rear-wheel drive. Anyway wouldn't it be possible to tow the car from teh rear? i.e. hook up whatever contraptions and lift the car up to the tow truck from the rear end. Thereby having the car front wheels spining freely on the road, I don't see why they can not do it this way? Thx
