1998 C280 Starter Runs Too Short
The starter will turn over every time, but intermittently it will not run long enough to start the engine. When this happens, it barely gets going and kicks right off again. Usually after 3 or more attempts, it will run properly and the engine will start.

When that happened, did you notice if your tach jumped to >2000 rpm? There is a TSB for this. MB recommends to remove the starter and lubricate starter gear teeth with the special grease p/n 000 989 76 51

Yes, the tach does jump > 2000 rpm, though I don't think every time. Not sure how this can even happen? The rpm sensor must not be tied to the crank/flywheel?
