2007 E320 Bluetec Transmission Failure

Took delivery of a 2007 E320 Bluetec last October. Within 150 miles the transmission exhibited shift abnormalities. Despite having taken the vehicle in for service three separate times, the transmission failed by 2,800 miles. The dealer bought back the car.

Anyone else having problems with this MY's transmission?

Yes, the 7G-Tronic has been problematic and rough shifting

I do not own a 7G-Tronic equipped vehicle, but most auto magazines comment that early versions continuously hunt/roughly shift.

I have heard of some issues with transmission failures of new 7G-tronics. Was there anything else wrong with the car? Just curious as to why the dealer bought back the car instead of replacing the transmission? Did they give you another E320?

The 722.9 transmission has had a variety of problems since day one. The majority of them can be fixed with software, in fact, there's a Service Campaign going on right now to update all affected vehicles. Some need to have "improved" internal parts installed. Others require replacement of the valve body(which includes the control unit). When all else fails, a small handful of vehicles will need new transmissions.

On the bright side, unlike 722.6, the 722.9 transmission doesn't have any problems with leaks.

Sounds like he excersized his rights under the lemon law to get his money back (after 3 tries to repair you're entitled to have them buy it back minus a mileage allowance)

...more power to him...no excuse for a $50K+ car to be in the shop 3 times and need a new tranny after less than 3K miles.

I think it is asking a lot of a buyer to accept a car that needs a transmission replacement done that early on in its life...I know I wouldn't want the car knowing it had been done if I had the choice to return it and get my money back.

BMW recently announced a 7 speed or 8 speed, I forget, stating that they were not going to left behind, left behind in what I don't know. It seems to me these people are certifiably nuts. Mercedes hadn't even mastered the five speed yet really. I love it when they say you can shift manually if you want - through 7 or 8 gears, sounds sort of all consuming to me.

What's the point of having so many forward gears on something like a passenger car anyhow? It seems like the transmission would be constantly shifting from one gear to another.

eh...fuel mileage or whatever.

my R350 has a semi harsh downshift 3-2 or 2-1 from time to time. Its not the clip coming off but more of a needed software update for the module. Its not bothering me to the point where it needs fixing yet.

Give them a few years, they havn't aged properly yet...all Mercedes leak.

Wouldn't it be better to put more work in a sturdy computer-controlled CVT? These have been going up in power handling capabilites recently.

I saw a cut-away of the MB CVT transmission while I was at a training course in Montvale last year. From what I've heard, there are no plans to bring it to the U.S. market.

yeap i know what you guys are talking about. my 2005 c230k does the same thing when it down shifts to 1st gear i noticed that the car would slow down like and engine brake so i made a little researched of mine and i read that mercedes automatic transmission from the 2000 and up since the tiptronic. the torque converter has been change its hydraulically funtioning i think thats the word that they used well they said the clutch foot lever has been elimninated but it function the same with a manual tranny with out using your feet. its all robotic as they say. so when the car downshifts the robot that they call release the clutch and put the gear and then releave the clutch and thats why its kind of rough. and it is also the reason why they put that kind of torque converter is because this is the way how an automatic transmission can downshift while you stepping on the brake.

7 Speed Tranny does not work

Well this is exactly what I thought, something is amiss with the new 7 speed tranny, I just test-drove a new one, and it shifted terribly, so bad that I am not going to think of one till they figure out what is going on.

Personally a 7 speed tranny has no place in a diesel, give me a 3,4 or my 5 speed tranny anyday, with this huge torque available, you wonder why benz would not figure this out on there own.

The 722.9 isn't exactly new, in fact, it's been around since 2004. For some reason, the early ones didn't have anywhere near the number of problems they've had in the last two years.
