Help - Key won't turn in ignition 88SEL
It started sticking and not turning 4 weeks ago, the first time for a couple tries, the second about 20 tries, the third time about 100 tries, and today it won't turn nada.
Is it normal for these 126 ignition switches to stick? What are the quick remedies, if any? Do I replace the ignition switch, and if so ...... how, or where do I go for the replace information? Any help you can offer would be fantastic! My window is half open, and it's raining (again.) NWman |

Pray
Do a search for ignition tumbler replacement.
The "ignition switch" (electrical) is in front of your problem. The key is STEEL...the tumblers are not ...so the ware takes place in the tumblers. If you cannot get the key to turn to the needed position...you cannot remove the tumbler set. ...and you're out of an easy replacement. IF ever again the key gives you ANY trouble ...replace the tumbler assembly. (Hell. I'd replace the tumblers every 100K as preventative maintenance.) IF you eventually succeed in your present endeavors! Krazy...but it worked for someone...Attach a massager motor to the key and try to turn ti to the removal position. Thank you C.I.
What, or where, exactly is the "removal position"? As it is right now, I put the key in, and cannot turn it right nor left. I jiggle the steering wheel back and forth, it is in the locked position, and I can feel something give a tiny bit inside the ignition switch, but I can't turn through to the on or start positions. If I have to change it out the hard way, what am I up against? Thank you. |

My previous experience with this problem may help you. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to jiggle the switch until it moved to the first stop removal position. I used a pair of pliers (your fingers may blister) to jiggle the key and turn it gently right until it gave in. Unscrew the ignition tumbler holding cap (looks like a big chrome or black washer) until you see a tiny hole; insert a pin and push and the tumbler is off. Fit replacement tumbler with new key by inserting pin in pin hole and push in until tumbler locks. Screw tumbler cap back on and you have working ignition again. Some people advocate the "hard way"e.g. ramming and breaking the tumbler but it causes more damage than necessary and is more expensive that way. Order replacement tumbler and key from this forum parts site ($@40.00+) or other MB sellers; is cheaper than MB dealer.
