Do you have a trick to pull put the strap other than the vice method suggested by Cap'n Carageous?

I've got to replace the driver's door strap on the wife's 300TE. I've done two other doors. The last two check straps came in a plastic "sleeve" which looks to like it's there to help keep out grunge. I've already installed one without the sleeve since the old check strap didn't have one.
SO - to the point - are the straps supposed to be installed with the plastic sleeve? THANKS Brian 89 300TE 84 733i
