722.6 oil change w/o torque conv drain plug - How?

I have a 2002 W211 E240 with 722.6. I wanted to change my tranny oil and found out that my torque converter does not have a drain plug.

I understand that if this is the case, I will only be able to change about 1/2 oy my tranny fluid? Is there a way to change all of the oil?

I heard that some dealers have this big machine that will add and replace your tranny fluid. The dealer is very far from where I live and was hoping to do this (change all fluid) myself.

Any tips?

Thanks!

Francis

Disconnect the cooler lines and turn the engine over - do not put the car into gear, and turn the engine off the instant the old fluid has been cleared.

Make sure you have a suitable bucket underneath to catch the old oil, you don't want that spilling onto the road.

If in any doubt (I know this works fine for a W210 so it should be similarly fine for a W211 with the same torque convertor) get a specialist to do it for you.

Please ensure you have a transmission dipstick before you start this job.

thanks! Are these the steps you mean?

1) Start the engine and just put it into PARK? Will the fluid flow? How about the new fluid how do you put it in?

2) Do I simultaneously drain and pour new fluid in? I've seen some shops have a machine that they use to flush out and pour in new fluid. I can't seem to picture doing this DIY.

If I just run the car idling without putting it into gear and let the old fluid run out - won't there be a risk of damaging the Tranny as the engine is running until the old fluid runs out.

Thanks!

Appreciate your tips!

francis,in this situation i get a bucket[pref old used white 5 gal drum],a long enough pce of hose to fit over the removed cooler line at the radiator and run into the bucket.2 cases of trans fluid ---start car and let idle in park----fluid should run into bucket----start pouring quarts of fluid thru dipstick hole and repeat until fluid running clean into bucket.now drop the pan and replace filter.

With the cost of the 722.6 or 722.9 fluids and factory dipstick tool factored in you should just let the dealer do it rather than attempting to flush yourself. It will be cheaper and they can monitor trans oil temp and guarantee a proper fill more accurately than you can. Temp and fill are cirtical on the 722.6.

Those fluids will run $10-15 a liter depending upon where you purchase it.

David, if you are putting new fluid into the transmission, wouldn`t you just be mixing new & old fluid together? shouldn`t you drain the pan & torq
converter, replace the filter, button things back up, add new fluid. then
remove the trans cooler line and when you see new fluid appear, shut off
the engine. reattach the cooler line. ???
which line flows into the radiator?
www.diselgiant.com shows how to change the trans fluid, but not the
flush. I remember reading on a post how to flush the lines some where.
maybe in the search some where.
Iam doing mine next week, be an expert then .

Charmalu, later 722.6 transmissions lack a torque converter drain.
