107 Odometer Repair - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I finally managed to get the speedometer of my 380SL removed and upon examination found that the odometer, which is electronic, has a small gear with 12 teeth, of which one was missing. Has anybody taken this thing apart? I am afraid if I try this, I will have gears and shafts all over the place. Need some guidance here.

Try PMing a guy named Strife. He generally posts in the SL forum. He is about the only guy that I know that has done any deep surgury into these things and he may even have a used one for you.

I have the same problem I just pulled my odometer a apart and the the 12 tooth gear was damaged, needless to say I have to replace that gear... I found this website today... give a try if it is working for you: http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/mb.html

those people at that website will have the correct gears for your odometer.i use them all the time.check the other two gears which are larger.the plastic has probably changed state and become soft so replace them also.

Thanks for the link. I still can't figure out how to get the little gear off. I can't pull it out because it has a flange on the other side. May have to send the whole unit in and spend the $124 to get it fixed.

update: my little gear (12 tooth) as arrived and I have already installed it. It was very straight forward installation. I have cut off the old plastic gear with a wire cutter ( just be carefull). The new gear has a smaller hole so either you have to re-drill it or take off the brass step-up insert ring from the rod. Me myself I took off the brass step-up insert ring from the rod. My odometer now is perfect working order. Just a note: before you unplug the wire harness from instrument cluster disconnect the negative cable from the battery. I learned that the hard way...

I have managed to short it out the negative circuit on the odometer circuit board... so I had to bridged it with a wire... good luck
