Calling on the gas MB Guru's 82 500SE

Having all diesel vehicles I have a couple components on the 500SE that are new to me. The first being a Webasto (engine coolant heater). Having put a fresh battery in the SE it took this unit a couple minutes to "energize". If this is a coolant heater can it be disconnected without causing any malady to anything else. The unit underneath the part that is identified as WEBASTO is the part that sound like it's revving up.

Picture #2 is a what? Guessing some sort of Non OEM part. I was going to just yank it out but it has probably a dozen wires running to it.

yank it out and all the wires and pipes associated with it .this is a gasoline fired heater to be set automatically to come on and warm up the coolant in really cold climates.as they age they are a fire hazard and potential coolant leaks.dump it overboard.

David is the box beneath it part of the unit - that's where the noise is comming from.

I have also learned from a PM the box in picture two was a device used for emissions and was very common on gray market cars to bring them up to US emissions standards.........sounds good to me

Where did that heater come from? Was it something the dealer would have installed because of the climate in his area, or was it factory-installed?

I don't have the build book with me on this particular car, but since DP brought it up it seems my feeble mind remembers that WEBASTO name on the build sheet. I had disconnected the battery to clean some contacts and when re-connecting this thing really started to spool up - WTF, very strange it carried on for about three minutes and quit. Wait until I get to post some pics of some oddities inside the cabin.

Looks like these guys are still around! Could be a good sign.

Regarding Webasto... Assuming it's the same thing, me thinks you won't need it in Mississippi.
