hi i bought a mercedes 1993 w124 320e Auto saloon. wen i bought it the gearbox was working fine and changing ok but now the car starts to change wen you hit 30mph then the second change is at 60 mph please can anyone help me or tell me what the problem is thanks.

I'm not a transmission expert but I think you could read faulty codes if you have or build the $10 codes tool. Instructions are posted in this forum. It could be an rpm signal to the ETC module or something like that.

do you reckon it could be the throttle linkage set in the wrong position like to tight or to loose

-Fluid level and condition (color, smell, etc.)
-Checked to see if the vacuum modulator hose is on and in good condition.
-checked the kick down switch, (at the gas pedal or near the linkage)

Make a few checks and report back. I'm sure some folks will chime in when you have more data.

The kickdown switch may be stuck. Whether it's under the accelerator or in the linkage someplace is unknown to me. Find it and unplug it to see if this is the problem which is not unknown.

i have disconected the kick down switch and this still hasent solved the problem ive checked the vacume pipes they seem to be ok aswell. the gearbox fluid is fine and is a pink colour and is at the right level to. i still cant think what the problem might be

1. For you isolationists, saloon and gearbox are normal English car words. They just happen to be used in, well, England.
2. The shift points are controlled by the control pressure cable running from the throttle linkage to the transmission. This is the first place to check and adjust it to the correct freeplay. Since you said the car initially shifted OK, I am doubtful that this will be the cause, but make sure it works OK, is connected at both ends, and is set to the correct freeplay.
3. If it's still "bunking" (English, 2-year-old for "broken"), then you need to find a good transmission specialist.

With regard to the question that was asked...

There is a cable, the Bowden cable, connecting the throttle to the transmission. This cable tells the transmission when to shift based on throttle position.

I don't know how it could have gotten out of adjustment that far all by itself, but who knows?

There is also a vacuum modulator. Its mission is to tell the transmission how firmly to shift. It would not be a factor here.
