1992 190e...Where to start

I Inherited a 1992 190e, it has some problems and I need to know where to start looking.

1. car will not start, it turns over ok and it does sound like timing chain is broken so what is the next logical step in diagnosing its problem.
my thinking is check for spark....
then what comes next

2. the power seats driver side will recline but will not come back and the heat rest will not work
and the passenger seat will come back but will not recline but the head rest works ok.
my think is there some kind of relay in that system or is this a pure switch problem

This look like my winter project car so any direction would be greatly appreciated

Do you have the 4 or 6 cylinder?

Remove the air filter and unbolt the valve cover and confirm the status of the timing chain before trying to start the motor again. If the chain is broken and the camshaft is not moving the valves in time with the pistons, then it's likely that the pistons have damaged the valves, pistons or both.

Project Car

If you need any of the parts for this car I probably have them. I have a wrecked sportline '92 6 cylinder in my garage.

Seat switches are the most likely for that problem in this model. Are you saying the timing chain IS likely broken? This is an interference design. If not broken, it pays to see if it is tight - if loose, it could have jumped.

Sounds like the timing chain is broken? It would not be cranking over ok if the chain was broken. The chain setup on the 4 and 6 cylinders is a very simple setup that rarely fails.
