722.4 Transmission leaking really bad

Hey guys

I've been looking all over for brave souls who might have attempted to pull out a transmission from a w201.

I've been restoring my 85 190E for the past few months, and I'd like to get it back on the road, but my transmission has a serious leak.

I replaced what I could from underneath the car. I got a new o-ring on the dipstick, and a new pan and seal. The old pan was bent, so I got rid of it. I still have a serious leak. Since the car is sitting in my garage, I would say it leaks from a half to a full liter of fluid every week, just sitting there. I can top it off and drive, and the tranny works like a charm.... but it's too risky at this rate.

I'm devising a plan to pull the transmission out, order a whole seal kit for it, and replace any seals I can get to without completely dissassembling the transmission. At the same time, the B2 piston comes to mind, as well as clutch packs and bands, which could never hurt. I bought the car used, drove it for 5 years straight, and I have no idea what shape the transission is in, other then that it still worked just fine the last time I drove the car.

Naturally, I'm looking for a shop manual that would have a complete overhaul procedure written out along with specs for all parts that need attention, however, I can't find one anywhere. I know these transmissions still get rebuilt, so it must be somewhere. If anyone could point me in the right direction to obtain such a manual, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Secondly, any suggestions as to what to suspect, or what to start with will always be greatly appreciated. I never worked on an auto transmission, but I do have access to all sorts of tools, and I have been fixing cars, motorcycles and atvs, for the past 5 years on an on going basis.

Once I get the project underway, I'll gladly take pictures and share anything I have learned since I know it will help many others.

the $25 one is OK but not great. The $79 one seems to be new, haven't heard anything about.

been there done that. Ive pulled a tranny from a w201. the hardest part is getting it out. Installing it isnt too bad. I can send you some documents if you give me your vin .

On the W201, the transmission will drop from the bottom, so the real task is getting the car up high enough to gain access and to haul it out from under the car.

This is all Awsome stuff

Thanx a lot everyone.... now, the next problem... where can I source out parts for this tranny? I found a seal kit, but I want to replace the clutches as well.

I'm sure I can go to the dealer and buy each one seperately, but it will cost a lot more then a kit, but I know there are kits for this transmission, however I'd be interested in more then just the banner kit.

The transmissionis out, managed to do it all myself with no helper.

Tough job, but it could have been much worse.

Here she is right after I pulled her out, needs a good clean up before I open her up.

Hardest part, the driveshaft. I didn't want to disconnect it on both ends, and it needs to come out in order for the transmission to move back far enough to be detached. I had to lower the transmission enough to stick the driveshaft above it and pull it apart.

Second hardest part, the exhaust, just cause its heavy and a real pita to work with, and in my case, old and rusty.

The bolts attaching the transmission to the engine can all be reached with a really long extension and a slim 17mm socket. Just lower the transmission a bit and they all come out real easy. The rest is just pieces.

Thanks for the write-up. This will inspire me if I ever have to do something similar. Did you use a tranny cradle on your jack? I can't tell. Nice drip pan, BTW - I have the same one.

I got a utility jack which has a platfrom on it, it made it real easy to get the tranny out without worrying about it falling on the floor and breaking into pieces.

Next, I have to clean it up cause it's REAL dirty, I got more pics but it's too emberassing to put em up, I'll post a few when it's nice and clean.

Now comes the rebuild, I'll try and make a nice write up about it to inspire others. I've seen a real nice rebuild diry for my pickup truck, but I decided to have a shop do that one for me. At the same time I'll do the main rear seal cause it's leaking, and when I'm done, the car should be good as new, prviding I don't screw up too much
