Cold moaning P/S pump?

With the change to cooler weather, my power steering pump in my 96 300d has taken to moaning in the mornin`. I once had a Toyota that had the same problem and it got so noisy in the winter that you could hear it 1000' away. I am planning to change the filter and fluid... is this going to remedy this problem or is it a pump rebuild issue?

Thanks!

Your W210 doesnt have a replaceable PS filter regardless what the parts stores may show.

Check for leaks and the fluid level. They are sensitive to being even a tiny bit low.

Yep, what Terry said. Every power steering system I've ever had would moan and sing if it had air in the lines or was low on fluid. Not sure about our W210s, but many PS systems self-bleed with a few lock-to-lock steering movements. Try that and check the reservoir a few times -- if nothing else, it doesn't cost you anything to peek!

Cheers, John

A thought just occurred to me (ouch!) that locking the wheel to one side (I believe it was the left) made for a growling noise since I got the car... my solution?... not to lock the steering in that direction. Is it worth flushing the system while I'm at it or just make sure it's full and forget it? I'll try the self purge method first.

Bummer that germanfilters.com sold me a filter for the beast when I ordered one of everything. Guess they also are unaware that there's not filter for this car!!!

Like John said, lock to lock to bleed it.

If you drain it DO NOT let it run out of fluid. Steering racks are expensive ($1,500ish).

I'd use the turkey baster and get out what you can and call it good.
