all fluids changed - now questions
Our 95 E320 has all new fluids and filters and brakes lines. The most recent was the transmission fluid.
The tranny fluid change invloved overfilling and redraining/ adding fluid. I did the drain, changed the filter and gasket (both squeaky clean with bright red old fluid), added 4 quarts of Valvoline Maxlife Dex/MercIII and another with the car running. Took the car for a mile drive and topped it off between the low and high of the 180* range. An hour later I took it for a 10 mile ride, rechecked and was WAY overfilled. So I drained a quart and readded about 1/2 qt and it reads perfect. -So question #1 is what goes wrong when the tranny is over-filled? -The second question has been puzzling me since it started getting cooler <70*F in the morning. And <80*F in the afternoon... The anti-upshift. I cannot figure out if this is a problem or something I need to adjust to. In the morning it takes a full mile (engine temp up to 60*C) before it will shift up. Even in the afternoons when it is warm I leave the company parking lot and have to wait until the engine temp is reading ~60 before it will shift. - Is this a problem or something I need to adapt to? I am grateful for the knowledge shared here!

If tranny was fine before the change I would suspect the fill level.
If was having problems beforehand it may require adjustment. Shifts are controlled by throttle position and vacuum. Check to be certain you didnt knock a vacuum line off somewhere. The modulator (vacuum) is on the side of the trans and controls firmness. Throttle position controls shift point and is adusted by the bowden cable. Go slow and easy on both and mark your start point so you can go back to it if needed.

shifting after warmup is perfect
I was wondering if there as an adjustment to the 'cold anti-upshift' somehow. If it warms up idling in the driveway for 3 minutes all is perfect. If I take off within 30 seconds in the morning it wants to stay in 1st until the engine temp is ~60C. Is this a feature or a problem?

Didn't drain the torque converter?

sure did
The torque convertor was the first thing to be drained, then the tranny. I should have mentioned that but took it for granted that you don't do one without the other... if you can.

I believe it is a feature of the computer controlled trans, not a fault. I live on an airport, and have about 1 mile to drive before I hit a city street. I'm limited to 15mph until then, and the car shifts fine when I get off property. I tried it this morning, and it stayed in what I believe was 2nd gear till it warmed up. I assume it is this way to warm the engine up quicker. Just my thoughts....
