190e Coolant Leak

I have a 1993 190e Mercedes and it seems to be leaking coolant from an open hose down below the water pump on the passenger side. Once it gets hot, it pours out at a pretty substantial rate. I can't find anywhere else it is leaking or any other reason it is getting hot- anybody know what this hose is or how to stop it from pouring all the coolant out?

If it's leaking out of the open hose and landing on the lower plastic engine shield, it means your water pump seal is leaking and the water pump needs to be replaced.
Don't let it overheat or you'll be looking at a head gasket replacement in the very near future.

The only 'open hose' I can think of on ours is the coolant reservoir overflow hose, which terminates near the auxiliary water pump for the heater, against the passenger side fender-well. If this is the one you mean, water exiting here means a faulty reservoir pressure cap or extremely high system pressure - such as with a head gasket leak.

Look again, if you don't have the hose coming from the bottom of the water pump, then your water pump must have been replaced without moving the hose from the old one to the new one.
In the photo, you can see the hose fitting under the r in star on the bottom of the water pump.

I see what you mean, but our water pump had no such fitting - nor did the one I replaced it with. Just a weep hole. Perhaps a difference over 2 yrs?

Thanks!

The water pump was indeed the problem and apparently the hose fitting was on the earlier models (which included mine) but not on the later ones. Thanks for the help!
