Muffler Hangers

Late this afternoon, I noticed that 3 of 4 muffler hangers on my 280E were gone. It was too late to special-order them from Napa and Midas wanted $6 a piece them; and who knows if they are cheap knock-offs or not. I realize this is Sunny, Bloody-expensive California, but $6 is insane - especially in view of the fact that 1 1/2 years ago, I bought the same hangers from Midas for $3 a piece. In the end, I found 4 "Basin Mack Gaskets" in the plumbing dept. at Ace Hardware for $2 each. Even if they only last a year - just as MBZ hangers do - it's worth it.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever used a different replacement for our constantly-failing muffler hangers.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to make sure I replaced the coat hanger wire I used in a pinch three years ago.

For the donut ones that failed on ours, I used coat hanger wire threaded through rubber fuel-line hose - until I received the new ones. I'll keep the temp ones handy for next time - I noticed no difference in noise or vibration from those.

Use Mercedes Benz muffler hangars ONLY - or pay the price for not doing it!!!

I had this problem, and just like you, living in Northern California,
and my muffler hangars went out and had a muffler shop replace them with generic Napa/Autozone hangars (donut style)

Baaaaad mistake. 3 subsequent catastophic failures in a years time - first one lets go and puts pressure on the rest of them, and all of a sudden your whole system is dragging on the ground, with sparks flying everywhere.

The last failure was on the highway, it was 20 miles out of town and I had to have the car flatbedded
into town. Horrible PITA.

After the 3rd time, enough was enough, and I paid the $6 or so for each of the OEM Mercedes Benz SQUARE muffler hangars that the factory intended the car to always have on it.

Predictably, there has been no problems ever since.

For this, there is NO SUBSTITUTE for factory Mercedes Benz replacement OEM muffler hangars. Pay the few dollars extra, and be safe, and sure.

I was eating up OEM rear hangers on the 126 at the rate of probably two a year. These are figure "8" hangers. Two years ago when returning from a GTG in Texas that rear hanger broke. Sunday in BFE Louisiana Advance Auto was the only choice for a store and I bought a generic "O" hanger for a buck and a half. After slipping it over both sides I ran a plastic zip tie right through the center essentially making in an "8". That was the last time I had to replace that hanger.

3 years later & the 2 rear round donut style hangers were on the ground as was the hanging muffler. I picked it up & used wire cord to secure it.
I have 3 square hangers I bought from mercedes. I took them to Enrique years ago hoping he would instal them but he said they looked fine.
Well they were for 3 years.

Now he says they have chain reinforced hangers
should I have them put them on or do what someone suggests just jack the muffler up & install the 2 square hangers in the back???

I suppose I could go to mrz benz n get the chain reinforced & put them on myself. I could save the instal $ & get that darn wheel lock changed/

any advice?

They are the same thing, save your money and just go to Napa in the future. When I worked at Napa several years ago, Midas was one of our biggest customers, would buy hangers and clamps by the crate.

fixed it

Saved a trip to MB Moptors
propped up the muffler w A 2by 4 & it wasn't easy but got the 2 square hangers on.
only thing missing is there seems to be a place where the bracket bolts to the indercarriage. I shoulkd try to find that piece as it would help secure it even better

yeah!

Next time use #1074920044. It's the chain reinforced hanger developed for the heavy 560SL rear muffler. They retail for about $12 each but will last a very long time and keep the sparks from flying. Mark
