Door Mirrors 97 S420
The passenger side mirror servo shorted out on my 97 S420 a few months ago. I can still move it side to side but not up and down. When it shorted out it blew the fuse so I know a short is in there and I need to check the wiring to see where the problem is. Question is are there any major parts in the actual mirror or is it inside the door panel? Also, I know the servo needs replacement, does anyone know of a cheaper source for this part or servo. Mercedes quoted I think $400, don't remember exactly but was expensive.
Does the small panel on the inside of the door by the mirror come off in one piece when the entire door panel comes off or is it a separate piece? If it comes off separately can someone give me the removal instructions? Thanks. lee

Most of the time on the later W140 chassis the mirror wiring is the problem! Many times the insulation will "fall" off of the wires & then the wires touch each other, sounds like you need a new mirror assembly!

We have fix few mirror wiring problem like your's it take's time R&R D&A mirrors assembly replace each wire one by one.

The way this happened was the mirror on the drivers side was knocked out of sync. I then used the mirror positioning switch to fold them all the way back. The mirror on the drivers side was moving much slower than the passenger side because the position it was knocked into. Because the passenger mirror positioned itself first and was waiting on the drivers side to complete the extra time the switch was held down caused the motor on the passenger side to either overheat or just plain short out. The fuse was blown, so I changed it. I then folded both mirrors back to the normal positions. If you moved the mirror glass side to side it was OK, but if you tried to move it up and down it would blow the fuse again. That motor has a short in it because 1/2 of it works OK. Is the motor/servo actually in the mirror assemply or is it mounted behind or under the door panel?
Does anyone know of a cheaper source for the mirror servo/motors? Thanks lee Last edited by lee00058; 11-19-2004 at 08:01 PM.

Hi there,
I have a similar problem also on a '97 W140. Were you able to get to the adjustment motor or servo? If so, how? There are basically 2 motors (servos) one to fold, and one to adjust (4way). From the parts fiche it seems that the 4way servo is available as a spare part and if so, there would be no need to replace the whole mirror. If I can only get the body colored piece behind the mirror off, without breaking it?....
