Timing Chain

87 560sel w126
250000 miles
Chain very loose

engine "bound" up then broke free, turns freely now with front socket set up

timing with both cam marks aligned, 7-8 degrees late

Could it had "skipped" a tooth with this timing??

looks as if all rails I can see are in tact.

Was runnig good before went to start it again and would not turn over in fact striped bendex gear on starter.

What gives??

Oh, just went through two starters (grinding)

Do I need to remove the front cover and how much of a job is this??

John

I'd remove the passenger side valve cover and take a good look to see if your valves are not bent. If the chain is that loose, then you need to replace it. the binding "Could Be" a piece of guide getting between the sprocket and the chain.
Hopefully you didn't harm the engine by turning it over against the bind. That "bind could have been valves interfering with the pistons. Hopefully not.

Would the timing be that close if it had jumped a tooth?

Also how can you tell if valves are bent by "looking" at them.

i tooth out would be 18deg not 7-8.you need to replace all three top rails and chain and tensioner.with valve covers off you can see bent valves by loose rockers or rockers laying at an angle.this usually occurs on one bank only.most commonly drivers side.

Chances of interference with the timing in its current position (assuming the engine wasn't spun backwards) is nil. My chain was off by about 12° and I had no interference. 7-8° is actually low because often new rails can bring that to 1-2°!

I have had three starters fail with thie motor in the last three weeks
(Grinding, stripprd bendix teeth on starter) abd then motor would bind up when trying to turn by crank.

This is why I thought it was a timing chain, could i be a flywheel?

hydro lock in one of the cylinders? if you haven't already, pull all spark plugs and see if it's easier to turn over.

Should I go to the trouble to pull the chain cover to make sure the bottom rail did not break and get into the cahin. It is free to turn now and no valves as suggest appear bent.
