Need help installing a distributor.
Hi-I have an 1996 Chevy K1500 truck with a 5.7 engine. I had started to do some work on the motor last March which I had to remove the distributor. I had set the engine up at TDC on the #1 cylinder and made a mark on the intake manifold where the rotor was pointing. Its been so long that now the mark is no longer there (wasnt planning on taking this long). The motor is still set up at TDC on #1 cylinder. How do I go about installing the distributor where it will match up with the motor? I know this is not a mercedes, but there are so many knowledgeable people here and you always get a quick response. Thanks in advance.
Mike

Make sure the rotor is pointing at the # 1 cylinder on the distributor cap.
If you have the Vortec engine with a " Crab-style " distributor cap ( the wires come out sideways ), make double sure that you are in fact pointing at the # 1 terminal in the cap. ![]()

The above instructions are correct. However, the distributor doesn't effect timing. Timing is set by a crankshaft sensor. The dist has a CAM sensor in it and the dist housing has to be set with a scan tool that will display cam offset. it should be 0 deg +/- 2 deg at 2000 RPM. Turn the dist to get this reading. This lets the computer know when to fire the injectors.
