Red face Smog due 83 500 SEC Euro

My first smog since I got the car 2 years ago.
Its had a history of not passing on first time.
Not sure if that is becasue it has been a stored car w maybe 100 miles per year for many years or they took it in cold.

My 88 Volvo passsed a few months ago

tips were
engine at temp
full gas tank
new oil
tire pressure
etc

I'll do all that but just wondering how it was converted & if that hurts it.

My main question is there is a flexible metal alum tubing coming out from under the pass side exhaust manifold area & its not connected to anything.

If that could be a problem I;d like to have that fixed before I fail a smog?

Here is the pic.

Thanks

Any other tips?
Should the day temps be as cool as possible? humidity?
anythiing helps

Hey there CS!
Been wondering where you went.

I'd take it to Enrique and ask him what iit will need to pass.
It's a good bet to do a tune up, new wires if you haven't done that, new Distributor cap, and Rotor, New spark plugs, new air filter. and oil change and filter.
Have Enrique put it on the CO machine and fine tune it. I believe that he has a smog shop that he uses. Might be worth the cost to have him tune it and take it to the smog shop.

I don't remember what all you did to it when you got the car.

I have an idea that the Metal tube was an attempt to pipe in air to the air filter, but I do not know. If it isn't connected to anything elase under the car, then I suspect that is what it was. ???

I just went through all that to get The Blue Bird Smogged and titled.

Hi!

Yeah its that time

I had all of that done last year & only put 200 maybe miles on the car.

so its oil should be clean. It was clean before & he didn't want to change it but I told him to do it anyway so guess the oil shoud be ok.

I installed a new air cleaner, dist cap & rotor
Enrique installed spark plugs & wires so I assume he also gave it a tune up.

Guess it should be good to go
but if he has some sort of pretesting & he can get it smogged better than I then it might be worth to put in his hands.

I'll have to call him & see what he says.

Maybe I'll try now but he's probably busy getting the car out of the shop.
I'll call tomorrow.

Have a great evening

There are a couple tests they do now that they didn't when you got your car smoggedlast time(seller did anyway). One is the Fuel evaporative functional test. This is the Gas tank vent valve connected to a Charcoal filter and then connected to the Vent hose from the passenger side Valve cover to the Air cleaner. I don't know what they did to your car to Federalize it, but there should be a CARB tag in the door jamb or on the radiator brace. That will tell you if you have EGR, Charcoal Cannister, etc. You should have the vent valve. A quick way to tell if the Gas tank vent valve is working is to remove the gas cap after the car is running for a bit and if there is a whoosh sound then the vent is working, if not that will have to be fixed and is usually a hole in the vent hose before the valve under the car. Easy $1.50 piece of hose and a couple clamps.
I tell you this from my experience trying to smog the Blue Bird.

Also take a copy of the Smog test(hope you got a copy of it with the car) and the smog guy will look at it and do the smog accordingly, but the Functional test is a new thing last year. Make sure you have no Gasoline leaks too. I remember you having one last time you posted I believe.

good tip
have the last smog I'll bring it

it passed all the ECS on the bottom of the sheet
egr visible pass
fuel evap controls pass
o2 sensor pass
pvc pass

it seemed to pass good
can they fake it
\
this guy was a curbstoner & prob has a relationship w a smog as he sells alot of cars

I wasn't going to fool w a gas leak.
Good thing is it stopped the day I drove it in so it didn't have to get towed. Enrique fixed the gas leak..had to drain the tank...he did a good job & he's reasonably charge too...love Enrique! he's the MR MB MAN!

Looks better than my 88 Volvo & its lo av on HC but way below av on CO & NO

Hope they didn't play with it

If its true then the car passed w flyin colors...still I don't trust that guy!

Guess nothing stops them from putting the tester in another car...

not sure about that gas tank thing
have to try to check that

Thanks again...

Enrique gave me the name a a smog near him & since they know him the'd give me a $10 discount.

Might be good to go to them as I have a good reference
but thruthfully I found a smog a few blocks away that was great with my old Volvo & they attached something not attached that my volvo mech missed as I took it to him before to get oil changed & to see if anything was wrong
So I think they would tryh to do there best too.

Enriques guy said they'd do there best to help me along & its near Enrique so I can shoot by him first as he doesn't know what that tubing is without seeing it

Well thats a plan now have to implement it.

Thanks, wish me luck

Unhappy

well it up to its old ways
passed everything but the hi rpm NO was 7 lousy points too hi

Smog guy thinks its the o2 sensor
Enrique needed to order it so back again tomorrow

good news is the freon is low so it needs a charge
also says unless you run it every week its a waste to do it as it will go down again

but it gets hot in the summer & its dangerous to drive ib heat exhaustionj

well hope it needs the 02 N MB will have to tune it
so we do it all again tomorrow

Do you think the smog guy is right about the o2 sensor
its not lit in the dash.

I still don';t know what that alum tubing is for but Enrique said its nothing important. Might have to ask him again if it goes somewhere...

Was down in water so I added about a qt to fill the resovoir which is what Enrique said I should do.
Worried about slight filmy oily residue in the container.
Well that's another time

Not much I can do about that but I do have a new radiator so don;t want it to be the gasket..uuugh
It's slight no frothy foam that would be bad!!!!

Took the time while the engine was cooling to retape the headliner up that was falling down in the back.

I actually put it back under the gasket around the window & its wow so much nicer
Its holding good & I can see out the back window...

Yeah!!!!!
No more tape.

It looks so much nicer!!!

Car was fun to drive today

I need to drive it more.
It;s a smooth power...

Luv it!!!

New O2 sensor
Passed avg on CO, real low on NO guess the O2 sensor did the trick but the HC just passes at hi average so that's its sore spot now
Alot of HC

?HC doubled from yesterday & at low rpm measured pinned the max
Now that too close for comfort but bottom line it paased so good for 2 years

HC could have been a richer tune?
Well it passed & its running ok

guess yesterday the guy lowered the idle below 500
its about 600 now so maybe that accounts 4 the increase in HC

Darn needed help on this one
they hooked it up to a smog meter to tune it & that was the trick

I'm happy they r happy & have to tell enrique I passed but he knows a;ready if I didn;t call him...

LOL

I wouldn't worry about it.

Just be happy that it passed.

Good Job CS!
Glad the car passed. I was a bit concerned. I'd plan on replacing the Cat before next time.
Also the high HC may be due to your not driving the car enough. Not just to heat up the cat, but a bit more than 200 miles in 2 years.....Nothing like an Italian Tune Up to blow the carbon out of a car. A good run up the 5 to Sacramento and back at speed would probably do it wonders. Or at least to the Grapevine and back. LOL

oooh cats r expensive? Volvos sure are

Correction 2 years mileage has been more like 450 miles.

Smog guy made a mistake on the oddometer...hope I get to the milage that he sent by the next smog...only kidding his mistake was only 20 miles higher than the oddometer..I put that on the car every trip to Enriques
