92 600SEL, somebody talk me out of this...

92 600SEL, 69,000 miles, VMI looks ok, carfax ok, mileage appears to check by visual inspection. No rust, seat leather very good, body very good, interior very good, power steering leak, runs and shifts well, ac works, cosmetic front and rear bumper damage, electric drivers seat inop, vac assist close inop, (yes, I know what the pump costs) radio antennae inop, needs brakes.....

Owner wants it gone--I think I can buy it for about $3K

I consider myself a very capable DIY'er, I'm considering this as a project. I've always kinda wanted a v12. (similarly, I've always kinda wanted a hole in my head.....)

I've heard the horrer stories about these cars, somebody please talk me out of this.......

Thanks,

J. M. van Swaay

It was an $80K car. 69K miles and everything looks OK, for $3K it is almost free . I'd go for it!

I think even a well-maintained 600 SEL has skeletons in its closet.

'92 W140's will have defective wiring harnesses.

All of them.

The engine wiring harness, the wiring to the throttle actutators, wiring to the starter.

You're looking at several grand right there.

Go for it.
If it is a dud, you could probably sell the engine for $ 5 k.

I think Suginami is on target.

While I might be tempted to purchase a car like this, I would weigh in those factors.

If the Throttle actuators have not been replaced, they will minimally develop problems with decaying wires. There are two of them, and together they should run about 3,000.00

Also, the ECM diagnostics on the 92 models are very poor. An intermittent ASR light can quickly become a hit or miss series of parts replacements.

Just be prepared for some maintenance "opportunities."

if you go to an auction and find two identical cars in same condition and mileage, one a v12 and the other a v8.the v8 will bring almost twice the money.the v12 is a maintenance hog and low volume production means the same parts cost about three times that of a v8.run don't walk.

Tempting Fate!

If you have a happy life today, do not buy the car. If you feel persecuted and have major mental health issues, buy it, as it will fall in with all your angst, present and future. Not even going to dwell on the financial debreedment of your savings and future money's. See, I have been through, the same debate process, as you are now.

Like Clint Eastwood's character, Harry Calahan, used to say in the "DIRTY HARRY," movies. Do you feel LUCKY? Well Punk, do you? The question I asked myself was, Can I walk away from this car, without remourse, emotionally as well as financially? I couldn't. But for $3000.00, I don't think I could pass it up! AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I've actually considered this kind of car, and I can repair a lot of things, but I can't MAKE parts. 3K of parts here, 3K here, 2K here, and all of a sudden you are talking about money.

I'd love to have one if I (1) had the mechanical skills to work on it, and (2) had a lot more free cash.
Good luck.

Hopefully I am smart enough to do this. I have done a ton of motor swaps and custom EFI in the past. This is going to be my first Mercedes project though. I have a beautiful 95 S600 in the garage that runs but has multiple ECM codes and two non functioning ETA's. Rather than dish out a ludicrous $3,000 for two throttle bodies and still having to replace god knows what ECM and harness wise, I decided to use a pair of common throttle bodies and Megasquirt fuel injection. The project will be commencing shortly. Wish me luck.
