DAS System Identification 1996 SL600

Gentelmen

I have a 1996 SL600
VIN # WDBFA76F6TF131011
Production Date 11/95

According to any literature I can find, US models used the DAS System II starting 9/95, which disabled engine starting via CAN buss or PWM. I belive mine is the CAN bus version. I have not been able to confirm that this is a system II and According to online EPC the if IR control module I have P/N @10 820 27 26, is from A G wagon. Furthermore I cannot find any of the components involved in the DAS system in the online EPC.

The literature also talks about a transponder and shows a second wire entering the IR module right next to the CAN wire. I dont have a place for this second wire. Does that mean I dont have a transponder.

My ultimate goal is to disable DAS so I can put this engine in another car. I understand I can do this by getting the engine running and disconnecting the module while it is running. It would be helpfull If I understood this system.

Can anyone identify this system and give me some advice

The components involved on my SL600 are shown in the pictures.

DAS2x starts in 1997 for 129 cars according to my wiring diagram. If you go to the EPC in group 46 steering wheel and steering lock you will see item 39 part# 168 462 02 53. This is the transponder coil used in DAS validation. If you have that coil it will stick out beyond the point where the key enters. If you have that then you have a system hard to avoid.

If you don't have it then you have the system called RCL and the starter is disengaged by the easily bypassed K38 relay. I didn't see anything on your data card to indicate which you have, but it might not say as it really wasn't an option.

Thank You very much Steve

I took a look at ESP and it looks like I don't have it. So from what you describe I have lucked out. I posted pictures of my ignition switch it's still in the car.

So I already have the K38 relay bypassed and I can now crank the engine. I guess I don't need to worry about DAS. It looks like ESP may be the last hurdle.
