89 190e center resonator removal?

My wifes 1989 190e 2.6 had its muffler fall out on a road trip a month ago. The muffler was fine but the center resonator is rusted out. We don't really want to fork out almost $500 for a new one. Is it wise to remove the center resonator and put a straight pipe in?

What are the problems with removing the center resonator?

And what does the center resonator do?

any help would be greatly appreciated. I am so glad I found this forum.
