Last night I was in the process of changing the fuel filter on my '92 190E and as I was unthreading the outgoing line from the filter the metal section of the fuel line right by the filter twisted and broke. It was badly rusted and the nut that is supposed to spin freely was seized to the line.

I have an appointment at the MB dealer on Monday. What items are they going to have to replace in order to fix this? Are they going to have to replace the entire fuel line? The service advisor I spoke to said that it will be a major repair. He emphasized the word major which made me cringe. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hard to believe that would be a major repair. Sounds more like he was punishing you for working on it yourself. But look it up on the EPC - it will tell you exactly what part you have to replace and give you a part number, and it's free, i.e. EPC, not the part.

I think you're right, deanyel. Gilly was able to walk me through the process of removing the broken piece and when I took it to the parts department today they said a replacement is about $60.00. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was easy to remove the part, but if I could do it then it would have been a piece of cake for a professional mechanic.

How long IS that line? I think service advisors are trained to make oil changes sound like rocket science.

I would say that the metal line that connects to the filter is about 6" and it then connects to a rubber hose that is about 18" long. The rubber hose then threads onto the metal fuel line that runs up to the front of the vehicle. The line can be difficult to see at some points due to the fuel pump and some of the other components beneath the vehicle.

upsets me. I think this kind of stuff should be reported to the customer satisfaction person at MBUSA. I would bet that there would have been a large bill from the dealer shop for this with them assuming that the customer doesn't know or cant do better.
